Definition | Dimensional weight is a calculation of the volumetric weight of a package, using the package’s length, width and height. |
Using this article | Dimensional weight is used to determine your item’s product size tier and shipping weight in certain instances. After reading this article, you will be able to (1) determine whether dimensional weight is used to calculate fees for your item and (2) calculate the dimensional weight for your product. To accomplish these tasks, you must first know the unit weight, product volume and product dimensions. |

Dimensional weight is calculated using your item’s packaged dimensions. To calculate dimensional weight in kilograms, multiply the package’s overall length, width, and height, then divide by 5,000. For more information, go to the Calculate dimensional weight section below.
Dimensional weight may apply when calculating fees for items that are oversize (small oversize, standard oversize or large oversize) but are not considered special oversize. Use the dimensions and unit weight to determine if the item is oversize.
An oversize item meets all of the following criteria when fully packaged:
Weight tiers for small, standard and large oversize
Size tier | Weight tiers applicable March 31, 2022, and after |
---|---|
Small oversize ≤ 61 x 46 x 46 cm Maximum unit weight limit: 1.76 kg |
≤ 760 g |
≤ 1.26 kg | |
≤ 1.76 kg | |
> 1.76 kg | |
Standard oversize ≤ 120 x 60 x 60 cm Maximum unit weight limit: 29.76 kg |
≤ 760 g |
≤ 1.76 kg | |
≤ 2.76 kg | |
≤ 3.76 kg | |
≤ 4.76 kg | |
≤ 9.76 kg | |
≤ 14.76 kg | |
≤ 19.76 kg | |
≤ 24.76 kg | |
≤ 29.76 kg | |
> 29.76 kg | |
Large oversize > 120 x 60 x 60 cm Maximum unit weight limit: 31.5 kg |
≤ 4.76 kg |
≤ 9.76 kg | |
≤ 14.76 kg | |
≤ 19.76 kg | |
≤ 24.76 kg | |
≤ 31.5 kg | |
> 31.5 kg |
Items that do not meet the oversize criteria above are considered envelope, parcel or special oversize. If your item doesn’t qualify as small, standard or large oversize, then only the unit weight is used to determine the associated weight tier and to calculate fees.
The dimensional weight (in kg) is equal to the unit volume (length x width x height) divided by 5,000.
You can look up product dimensions for your existing FBA inventory using the Monthly Storage Fees report. To do so:
For products that are currently sold on Amazon but that you don’t sell yet, you can look up the product dimensions to calculate volume by using the Revenue Calculator. To do so:
For products that you currently have in FBA inventory, you can look up the size tier using the Fee Preview report. To do so:

In the examples shown, fulfillment fees are applied based on the store where the item is sold.
The measurement system for product dimensions and volume vary depending on the local standard in which the fees are calculated. The fee pages for the region indicates which measurement system and units of measure are used for that region. For example, the metric system is used in Europe, so products in that region are measured based on meters and grams.
The unit weight is the scale weight of the product when fully packaged. Dimensional weight is an estimate of what the weight will be based on the product’s dimensions. Depending on the size tier of the product, either the unit weight or the dimensional weight will be used to calculate the shipping weight. View more details on the Shipping weight page.
