Classify your products

The Amazon product catalog lists each product sold, identified by ASIN. Each product is defined by attributes such as product name or manufacturer. Each product entry also has information that places the product into the appropriate category and subcategory. When customers use Browse or Search, the resulting list of products is grouped into these categories and subcategories. For more information about using categories to leverage browse and search results, see Use Search & Browse.

When you add a new product, Amazon creates the ASIN automatically. To sell a product, you add an inventory listing that describes your offer for the product. Your inventory listing includes information such as your selling price and inventory amount.

The Add a Product feature walks you through the steps to select the appropriate category and subcategory for your products. You are prompted to supply the information in one of two ways:

Create a new product:

Browse a list of categories and subcategories, and then add your product.

Find an existing listing of your product on Amazon, and then add your offer-specific information, such as price and condition.

Even if you choose a category that prompts you to look for existing products, you can still add your own new product. When you add a new product in some categories, Amazon still attempts to match it to an existing product. For more information about how this works, see Product Matching.
